STEP 1: DEVELOP A PLANNING COMMITTEE
The first step in beginning a FireFree program in your community is to develop a Planning Committee. The more people involved the better! Start with members of the structural and wildland fire service, insurance representatives (be sure to ask your local SAFECO representatives), business leaders and local politicians. It’s a smart idea to get one representative from each of your fire agencies to make sure your community is well-represented.
This group of people will help you develop and customize the FireFree program in your area. Once you get the planning committee on-board, you will find each member has connections in the community and ideas about how to make the program successful. Each of you can spearhead one component of the program. For example, one committee member might want to head up the team leader program, while another leads the speakers bureau, and so on.
We recommend calling individuals you think would be valuable to the committee and explaining the program to them to see if they would be interested.
