STEP 2: SECURE PROGRAM AND BUSINESS PARTNERS

Securing program partners or business partners can happen at anytime throughout the planning process. As your program develops, you will come up with a “wish list” of items and can approach various businesses in your community for these. Business partners can get involved by providing materials, money, volunteers or other identified program needs.

The more local businesses you get involved, the more the program becomes community-wide. It’s all about getting as many people as you can to take part in the program. We recommend approaching businesses that have an interest in wildfire protection – such as timber companies, developers, real estate agents, and community-oriented businesses.

In Central Oregon, the planning committee was most successful in getting business partners when it approached a business with an idea in mind. For example, you can ask a business for a certain amount of money to pay for print media or ask a printer for donated printing.

One more thing to keep in mind when approaching businesses: Always think of how you are going to recognize that business as a partner. Will you place their logo in the advertising? Will you announce the partners to the local media? Businesses are more likely to get involved if they will receive recognition in the community.
