STEP 5: DEVELOP A SPEAKERS BUREAU

To inform business and civic leaders of wildfire danger inherent to your area, the FireFree program conducts a public speakers bureau. The speakers bureau is made up of FireFree volunteers and team leaders who speak to business groups, civic groups, schools, homeowners associations or other interested organizations.

To develop a speakers bureau, create a targeted list of potential organizations. Start by asking your local chamber of commerce if they have a list of business and civic organizations. It is also beneficial to speak to homeowners associations in your area, especially associations for the at-risk neighborhoods.

Once you have your list, send out a letter to these organizations that lets them know about the availability of a FireFree speaker. Once again, you will have more success if you follow-up with phone calls after the letter is sent.

We recommend asking team leaders to participate in the speakers bureau. We suggest you have one fire person and one insurance person at each speaking engagement. This way, the fire person can answer any fire-related questions and the insurance person can answer any insurance-related questions.
